AN EDUCATION ON SMALL MESH (5/8"
California-Sizes) Spark Arrestors and Oval Flue Tiles. Many
localities - primarily in California, but also in other areas around
the nation - have spark arrestor codes that call for 1/2" spark
arrestors. The California state building code calls for such
spark arrestors on all new construction. Other California
codes call for it in "wooded areas" or "within 200 feet of wooded
areas." To make such a reduced spark arrestor that does not
clog, chimney cap manufacturers follow the interpretation that a
sphere larger than 1/2" in diameter should not penetrate the
screen. This is wording the National Fire Protection
Association uses, as well as the one being referred to by
several California localities. Thus, the spark arrestor
screens on the caps actually measure 5/8" from center to center, but
still won't let a 1/2" sphere through. This makes them
somewhat clog resistant while still meeting major code
interpretations. Round, oval and large rectangular flue tile
sizes are often found in California, Arizona, Nevada and
Oregon. The caps featured on this page also have a special
base that fits both square and round, or rectangular and oval flue
tile sizes. This is done by welding triangular pieces to the
corners of the caps' one piece base. This allows the cap to
fit flues with either square or rounded corners. Thus, there's
not one cap for rectangular flues and another for oval - the
same cap does the trick.

Hy-C STAINLESS CHIMNEY
CAP
The first thing
you'll notice about the Hy-C Cap is its unique corner installation
feature. The slotted hex-head mounting bolts are indented into
the base to give the cap an even, secure grip against the flue tile.
You'll also notice how the lower
edges of the mesh screen are folded inward. This gives a
complete, firm base resting on the flue tile - you won't see any
critters climbing under this cap.
The Hy-C 100% 304 stainless steel
chimney cap has a 24-ga. single-piece top with smooth, rolled
edges. The 18-ga. 3/4" mesh screen is 6 1/2"
high.

You'll will find one round 12" cap shown in smaller picture; it
has legs that slip inside round flue tiles for a snug
fit.

CAP
 For those
of you who want the top-of-the-line traditional chimney cap
there's Gelco Copper Chimney Cap! It has a beautiful
color when new, it acquires a rich patina as it weathers, and it
adds the much desired Statue of Liberty green as it ages. The
8" high screen is 18-ga. copper and the lid is 24-ga. copper.
The base and screws are copper-plated stainless steel and the rest
of the top is all copper.
This single flue
copper chimney cap is available in 6 flue tile sizes. All
copper caps come with lifetime warranty.
